Mergers and acquisitions in Belarus

Abstract

For the transition economies, the mergers and acquisitions are one of the methods of integration of national economy into the world economy. However, this process in Belarus is contradictory in essence. The new optimistic trend in the Belarusian mergers and acquisitions market is stimulated by the remarkable growth of the IT sector, especially following the additional benefits for residents of the high­tech park — the chief privileged regime for IT companies which was introduced by Presidential Decree No 8 on the Development of the Digital Economy. The Decree forms the legal framework for mining, creating, selling, buying and exchanging cryptocurrencies and tokens. Belarus, thus, has become the world’s first jurisdiction with a complete regulation of businesses based on blockchain technology and the first country in the world to authorize smart contracts at the national level. Although mergers and acquisitions in Belarus market still have a long way to go to catch up with international trends, more and more foreign investors facing the question of acquiring a business or founding a joint venture in Belarus. In current paper, we consider mergers and acquisition trends in Belarus and discuss possible ways of how to attract more investments in the country.
